Pan An (Climbing the Saddle) is the second of the Twelve General Gods (Jiang Qian), right after Jiang Xing. The name is often explained as climbing into the saddle: once you're on the horse, the next thing is to move forward. In the palace holding Pan An, your effort is more easily noticed, and there is a chance to move up a step. It's a very light god; treat it as a tailwind for that palace. To find which palace it's in for you, draw your chart.

How Pan An is placed

Find Jiang Xing first. Pan An is one palace after it:

  • Yin, Wu and Xu years: Wei
  • Shen, Zi and Chen years: Chou
  • Si, You and Chou years: Xu
  • Hai, Mao and Wei years: Chen

So Pan An only lands in Chen, Xu, Chou or Wei. The natal chart uses your birth-year branch; the annual set uses that year's branch. In 2026, a Bing Wu year, Pan An is in Wei; in 2027, a Ding Wei year (from February 6, 2027), it is in Chen.

What Pan An means

Xingge reads it like this: your effort is readily recognized, and there is a chance to move up; take it one solid step at a time.

"Recognized" is the key. Pan An doesn't make things fall from the sky. It makes what you do easier to notice: someone reads the report, someone replies to the proposal, someone remembers the extra you put in. The second half is a reminder: when the chance comes, taking it one step at a time is steadier than leaping too high at once.

For older readers, Xingge reads it a little differently: you are readily held in regard and treated with courtesy, so accept other people's kindness graciously.

Pan An in key palaces

Using the annual set:

  • Career Palace: this year your work is more easily seen by managers or clients. A good time to go for a new position or responsibility.
  • Wealth Palace: more chances to turn expertise into income. Don't be too modest when you quote a price.
  • Life Palace: you get more attention this year overall. Say what you want to do, and someone will take it up.
  • Spouse Palace: what you give in the relationship is easily seen. When you're thanked, remember to respond in kind.
  • Health Palace: when you're full of drive, still put rest time on the schedule.

Natal and annual, read separately

The natal Pan An sits in the same palace for life; the annual set is placed again each year by the year's branch. Xingge's palace readings only use the annual set, in the "this year" part of the reading. The palace directly opposite Pan An always holds Tian Sha: as you climb, you will also run into people more forceful than you. Read the two together and you'll have a better sense of where the lines are.

Pan An and Sui Yi are often mentioned together: one is about moving up, the other about moving out. The Twelve General Gods as a set are not in the (The Complete Book of Zi Wei Dou Shu), and there is no Quan Shu text on Pan An to quote. When the San Ming Tong Hui (a Ming-dynasty classic of Bazi) cites the Ming Shu, it mentions the Post-Horse and Pan An together as favorable spirit stars, while reminding the reader that even with favorable ones you still have to look at the whole chart. Xingge follows the standard placement and reading.

FAQ

What does Pan An mean?

Pan An is the second of the Twelve General Gods. It means your effort is readily recognized and there's a chance to move up. It carries very little weight and should be read with that palace's main stars and transformations.

How is Pan An placed?

One palace after Jiang Xing: in Wei for Yin, Wu and Xu years; in Chou for Shen, Zi and Chen years; in Xu for Si, You and Chou years; in Chen for Hai, Mao and Wei years. So Pan An only lands in Chen, Xu, Chou or Wei.

Pan An is in my Career Palace this year. Should I change jobs?

Pan An reads as your work being easily noticed, which suits pushing for more where you already are. Whether to change jobs depends on the Career Palace's main stars, transformations and Decade Luck; Pan An only adds a little tailwind.
