Xi Shen (Rest Spirit) is the fourth of the Twelve General Gods (Jiang Qian). "Xi" here means rest, coming to a stop. In the palace holding Xi Shen, you tend to feel low on drive for a while and want to stop and catch your breath. That's not a bad thing: after running for a stretch, a break is natural. Just don't rest so long that you forget to get up again. It carries very little weight; read it as that palace slowing down. To see which palace it falls in for you, draw your chart.
How Xi Shen is placed
Count three palaces on from Jiang Xing:
- Yin, Wu and Xu years: You
- Shen, Zi and Chen years: Mao
- Si, You and Chou years: Zi
- Hai, Mao and Wei years: Wu
So Xi Shen only lands in Zi, Wu, Mao or You, the same four branches as Jiang Xing. In 2026, a Bing Wu year, it is in You; in 2027, a Ding Wei year (from February 6, 2027), it is in Wu.
What Xi Shen means
Xingge reads it like this: low on drive, wanting to stop and catch your breath; rest is fine, just don't stop too long.
Xi Shen comes right after Sui Yi, and the order itself is a rhythm: run first, then rest. The Sui Yi palace is busy heading out; the Xi Shen palace wants to pull back in. You don't need to treat "low on drive" as a problem. It's more like your body and mood telling you to shift gears. There's only one thing to watch: stop too long, and things that came easily get rusty.
Xi Shen in key palaces
Using the annual set:
- Life Palace: you want to go slower overall this year. Cutting one or two things from the schedule beats forcing yourself through all of it.
- Career Palace: less push at work. A good time to tidy up and catch up on learning, rather than opening new fronts.
- Wealth Palace: less drive to earn. Look after your steady income and hold off on new investments.
- Spouse Palace: more time curled up together. Quiet isn't the same as cold; plan something new now and then.
- Health Palace: this palace is about your daily rhythm anyway. With Xi Shen here, it's an even better time to put sleep and rest first.
Natal and annual, read separately
The natal Xi Shen sits in the same palace for life; the annual set is placed again each year by the year's branch. Xingge's palace readings only use the annual set, in the "this year" part of the reading. The palace directly opposite Xi Shen always holds Xian Chi: one side wants quiet while people come crowding in on the other. Read the two together to see where to hold back this year and where to let go.
This Xi Shen is not the Bo Shi Xi Shen
Xi Shen of the Twelve Erudite Gods (Bo Shi) sounds almost the same (in pinyin the two are spelled alike), but the meaning is completely different. That Xi Shen, the Joy Spirit, is counted from Lu Cun, belongs to the natal chart, and is about joy and happy occasions. This Xi Shen is counted from Jiang Xing on the year branch's trine, is mainly read by year, and is about rest and slowing down. The two sets sit in different positions on the chart, so check which one you're looking at.
The Twelve General Gods as a set are not in the Zi Wei Dou Shu Quan Shu (The Complete Book of Zi Wei Dou Shu), and there is no Quan Shu text on Xi Shen. Xingge follows the standard placement and reading.
