Career Palace

The Complete Book of Zi Wei Dou Shu, Volume 2: Placing the stars and the twelve palaces · Original text with translation

Introduction

This chapter comes from the palace-by-palace verdicts in volume two of the Complete Book of Zi Wei Dou Shu and covers the Career Palace: career, honors and official fortune. In the old world a career mainly meant holding office, so the verdicts turn on civil or military posts, high or low rank, and whether a post can be kept.

  • Star by star (segments 1 to 26): for each star in the Career Palace, whether it suits civil or military office and how much power and rank it brings; with Qing Yang, Tuo Luo, Huo Xing, Ling Xing, Di Kong or Di Jie added, mostly 「平常」 (ordinary), 「退官失職」 (leaving office, losing the post) or 「貶謫」 (demotion and exile).
  • The Dou Jun (segment 27).
  • Appended verses (segments 28 to 37): five short poems, on judging high ministers, the two chief councils, civil officials, military officials and clerks, each a seven-character verse saying which combination leads to which office.

Common words:

  • 文武之材: talent fit for both civil and military office. 武職崢嶸: towering success in a military post.
  • 胥吏, 吏員: petty clerks in government offices, not ranked officials; 「吏員立腳」 is making one's living as a clerk.
  • 貪污之官: a corrupt official, said outright in the text and translated as written.
  • 貶謫, 黜降: demoted, sent to a post far away.

The base text of this chapter has many miswritten and misplaced characters: the 候 in 「封候伯」 should be 侯; 「胥更」 should be 胥吏; 「不和文人」 is probably 不利文人; the 美 in 「見美陀」 should be 羊; and the Tian Tong entry crams lines about Tai Yang, Tian Liang and Tai Yin together, so its punctuation is in doubt. The text notes on each segment explain.

TranslationZi Wei in the Career Palace: in Miao or Wang, meeting Zuo Fu, You Bi, Wen Chang, Wen Qu, Tian Kui and Tian Yue, imposing and outstanding, rising to be made a marquis or an earl. With Qing Yang, Tuo Luo, Huo Xing or Ling Xing added, ordinary. With Tian Fu, power and rank, fame and fortune both complete; with Tian Xiang, power and rank at court and beyond, upright and clean; with Po Jun, a place found amid noise and competition.

Imposing and outstanding.
候伯
Marquis (written 候 for 侯) and earl: high noble titles.

Textual note: The 候 in 「封候伯」 should be 侯, marquis.

Commentary

The Career Palace is one of the Life Palace's trines, forming the Life Palace's three sides together with the Wealth Palace, so the stars of the Career Palace are always within the Life Palace's San Fang Si Zheng. The palace opposite is always the Spouse Palace, so career and marriage mirror each other. Zi Wei in Miao or Wang meeting Zuo Fu, You Bi, Wen Chang, Wen Qu, Tian Kui and Tian Yue rises 「位至封候伯」 (a marquis or an earl), the highest verdict in this chapter: the emperor star in the career seat, with its court of officials around it. With Tian Fu (Yin, Shen), fame and fortune both; with Tian Xiang (Chen, Xu), upright; with Po Jun (Chou, Wei), a place amid competition. See Zi Wei in the Career Palace.

✎ Note

TranslationTian Ji in the Career Palace: in its temple, power and rank; meeting Wen Qu, a fine talent; only when it sees Qing Yang, Tuo Luo, Huo Xing or Ling Xing is it fitting. With Tian Liang, talent fit for both civil and military office; with Tai Yin, a name that shakes the frontier peoples. In a Xian palace, leaving office and losing the post; a footing only as a clerk.

吏員
A clerk in a government office, not a ranked official.
立腳
To gain a footing; to make a living.

Textual note: The 巨 in 「為良巨」 is probably an error for 臣, 'a fine minister'. 「見羊陀火鈴方宜」 contradicts what the Quan Shu says everywhere else about malefic stars being unlucky and probably has something missing or miswritten; the translation renders it literally.

Commentary

Tian Ji in its temple: power and rank; meeting Wen Qu, a fine talent. 「見羊陀火鈴方宜」 runs against the Quan Shu's constant rule that malefic stars are unlucky, and the text note leaves it in doubt. With Tian Liang (Chen, Xu), talent for civil and military office: this is Shan Yin Chao Gang (Good Shelter at Court) in the Career Palace. With Tai Yin (Yin, Shen), a name that shakes the frontier. In a Xian palace, leaving office, and 「吏員立腳」, only low-level paperwork. In the present-day workplace, it suits planning, research and technical work. See Tian Ji in the Career Palace.

✎ Note

TranslationTai Yang in the Career Palace: in its temple, good for both civil and military office; lucky if it does not see Qing Yang, Tuo Luo, Huo Xing or Ling Xing. With Tai Yin, eminence; with Zuo Fu, You Bi, Wen Chang, Wen Qu, Tian Kui and Tian Yue in the same palace, and Hua Ke, Hua Lu and Hua Quan as well, it surely holds rank of the first grade.

一品
The first grade, the highest rank in the old official hierarchy.

Textual note: The 君 in 「更君科祿權」 is probably an error for 加 'adding' or 會 'meeting'.

Commentary

Tai Yang in its temple: good for civil and military office alike. The Tai Yang chapter says it is 「最宜在官祿宮」 (What Does Tai Yang Govern?), best in the Career Palace, where it is strongest. With Tai Yin (Chou, Wei), eminence; with Zuo Fu, You Bi, Wen Chang, Wen Qu, Tian Kui and Tian Yue, plus Hua Ke, Hua Lu and Hua Quan, 「定居一品之貴」. The Tai Wei Fu adds 「太陽會文昌於官祿,皇殿朝班」 (Tai Wei Fu). For work today: public-facing roles that need visibility. See Tai Yang in the Career Palace.

✎ Note

TranslationWu Qu in the Career Palace: in its temple, in the same palace with Wen Chang, Wen Qu, Zuo Fu and You Bi, towering success in military office, and even an ordinary person prospers. Meeting Hua Ke, Hua Quan and Hua Lu, an official in charge of wealth. With Tan Lang, a corrupt official; with Po Jun, rising from the army;

Towering, lofty: standing out above others.
The army.
Commentary

Wu Qu in its temple with Wen Chang, Wen Qu, Zuo Fu and You Bi: towering military success; meeting Hua Ke, Hua Quan and Hua Lu, a 「財富之官」, an official in charge of finance and the treasury. With Tan Lang (Chou, Wei), 「貪污之官」: a wealth star plus a star of desire in the career seat, and the old readers called it corruption outright. With Po Jun (Si, Hai), rising from the army. It is a rare moral verdict in the Quan Shu's Career Palace entries. Finance, accounting, the military and police are Wu Qu's typical fields; people with Wu Qu and Tan Lang here need to be especially strict about financial discipline. See Wu Qu in the Career Palace.

✎ Note

Translation(Wu Qu) with Qi Sha: honors won by force. In a Xian palace, or with Tuo Luo, Ling Xing, Di Jie or Hua Ji, no share of honors.

To win honors by force or by unconventional means.

Textual note: 「與安身七殺同」 reads awkwardly; it should probably be 與七殺同, 'with Qi Sha', with 安身 a stray insertion.

Commentary

Wu Qu with Qi Sha (Mao, You), 「橫立功名」: honors won through drive and unconventional means, the same wording as in the Qing Yang chapter. In a Xian palace, or with Tuo Luo, Ling Xing, Di Jie or Hua Ji, no share of honors. Wu Qu has no true Xian position in either the Quan Shu or Xingge (its lowest is Ping, in Si and Hai), so 'Xian palace' probably means a Ping position or one heavy with malefic stars. Wu Qu takes Hua Ji in Ren years, so Wu Qu in the Career Palace in a Ren year calls for care over money disputes at work.

✎ Note

TranslationTian Tong in the Career Palace: in its temple, suited to both civil and military office; lucky without Qing Yang, Tuo Luo, Huo Xing or Ling Xing. With Ju Men, small at first and great later. Meeting Tai Yang, Wen Chang, Wen Qu, Hua Ke, Hua Quan and Hua Lu, lucky and fine, with outstanding natural gifts; (with Tian Liang) in the same palace, power and rank; with Tai Yin in a Xian palace, judged as a petty clerk.

A petty clerk in a government office.

Textual note: The 更 in 「陷宮胥更論」 should be 吏. The phrase 「同權貴太陰同」 is unclearly punctuated; it should probably read '(with Tian Liang) in the same palace, power and rank; with Tai Yin in a Xian palace, judged as a petty clerk'. Tian Tong and Tai Yang also never share a palace on a chart, so the line about Tai Yang and Wen Chang probably means meeting them from other palaces.

Commentary

Tian Tong in its temple: good for civil and military office; with Ju Men (Chou, Wei), small first and great later. The text note explains that the second half is unclearly punctuated, and since Tian Tong and Tai Yang never share a palace, 'Tai Yang, Wen Chang, Wen Qu, Hua Ke, Hua Quan and Hua Lu' should be read as stars it meets. A 'petty clerk' is a low-level functionary. Tian Tong in the Career Palace leans toward a stable, relaxed working environment, not the type to charge at the front. Civil service, service industries and welfare work fit well. See Tian Tong in the Career Palace.

✎ Note

TranslationLian Zhen in the Career Palace: in its temple, power and rank in military office, but it does not last. With Tan Lang, power and rank amid noise and competition; meeting Zi Wei in the trines, 'civil office decree'; with Qi Sha, rising from the army; with Tian Xiang or Tian Fu, returning home in silk, wealthy and of rank.

Textual note: The meaning of 「紫微會三方文職諭」 is unclear; the 諭 looks miswritten. Kept as written.

Commentary

Lian Zhen in its temple (Yin, Shen): power in military office, 「不耐久」, but not for long. With Tan Lang (Si, Hai), power amid competition; with Qi Sha (Chou, Wei), rising from the army; with Tian Xiang (Zi, Wu) or Tian Fu (Chen, Xu), returning home in glory and wealth. In the Quan Shu, Lian Zhen is a 'lord of the Career Palace' (the phrase is from the section on the stars' elements and Dippers), so here it is back in its own seat; but its transformed qi is prisoner, so power comes fast and is hard to hold. The text note leaves 'civil office decree' in doubt. See Lian Zhen in the Career Palace.

✎ Note

TranslationTian Fu in the Career Palace: in its temple, lucky for civil and military office alike; without Qing Yang, Tuo Luo, Huo Xing, Ling Xing, Di Kong or the star of waste, wholly fine. With Zi Wei, a name in civil and military office; with Lian Zhen or Wu Qu, power and rank; seeing Di Kong and Di Jie, ordinary.

Commentary

Tian Fu in its temple: lucky for both civil and military office, and wholly fine without malefic stars. With Zi Wei (Yin, Shen), a name in both; with Lian Zhen (Chen, Xu) or Wu Qu (Zi, Wu), power and rank; with Di Kong and Di Jie, ordinary. With Tian Fu in the Career Palace, the Spouse Palace opposite always holds Qi Sha: steady career, stormy marriage, the other side of the same chart as Qi Sha in the Spouse Palace (Spouse Palace). See Tian Fu in the Career Palace.

✎ Note

TranslationTai Yin in the Career Palace: in its temple, much rank; in a Xian position, haughty, with sudden ruin, hard to rise to eminence. Meeting Tai Yang, Wen Chang, Wen Qu, Zuo Fu and You Bi, rank of the third grade; with Tian Tong, suited to both civil and military office; with Tian Ji, advancement amid noise and competition, a footing as a clerk.

Commentary

Tai Yin in its temple: much rank; in Xian (Mao, Chen, Si), 「氣高橫破」, high ambitions and a sudden fall. Meeting Tai Yang, Wen Chang, Wen Qu, Zuo Fu and You Bi, 「三品之貴」, rank of the third grade. With Tian Tong (Zi, Wu), good for civil and military office; with Tian Ji (Yin, Shen), 「鬧中進身,吏員立腳」. Tai Yin in the Career Palace leans toward civil, desk-based and planning work, and is also often tied to real estate and to fields connected with women. See Tai Yin in the Career Palace.

✎ Note

TranslationTan Lang in the Career Palace: in its temple, meeting Huo Xing or Ling Xing, great authority in military office. With Zi Wei, civil and military posts, with no small power and rank. In a Xian palace, a corrupt official; with Qing Yang, Tuo Luo, Di Kong or Di Jie added, ordinary.

Commentary

Tan Lang in its temple meeting Huo Xing or Ling Xing, great military authority: the Huo Tan pattern and the Ling Tan pattern in the Career Palace. With Zi Wei (Mao, You), no small power; in a Xian palace (Si, Hai), 「貪污之官」, the same verdict as for Wu Qu with Tan Lang in the Wu Qu entry. Tan Lang in the Career Palace means ambition and many talents at work, and an easy slide into gray areas. See Tan Lang in the Career Palace.

✎ Note

TranslationJu Men in the Career Palace: in its temple, power and rank in military office; civil officials do not last. With Tai Yang, advances and retreats, and in its temple it lasts long. With Tian Ji in the Mao palace, lucky and fine; in the You palace, fine but without beginning or end,

Commentary

Ju Men in its temple: power in military office, and 「文人不耐久」: Ju Men's quarrels do not suit civil officials. With Tai Yang (Yin, Shen), ups and downs, lasting when in its temple. With Tian Ji, lucky and fine in Mao, but 「雖美無始終」 in You, fine yet without a proper beginning or end. Curiously, Tian Ji with Ju Men has exactly the same brightness in Mao and You (Tian Ji Wang, Ju Men Miao), yet the Quan Shu still ranks them; the reason is probably that Mao is wood, and Tian Ji, also wood, is in its home element there. See Ju Men in the Career Palace.

✎ Note

Translation(Ju Men) in a Xian palace meets regret and trouble; with Qing Yang, Tuo Luo, Huo Xing, Ling Xing, Di Kong or Di Jie added, worse still: retiring from the post and laying down office.

Regret and difficulty.
Commentary

Ju Men in a Xian palace (Chen, Xu) meets regret; with malefic stars, leaving the post. Chen and Xu are the Net of Heaven and Earth, and with Ju Men's own darkness added, work easily drags one into disputes. The Gu Sui Fu says 「巨門辰戌為陷地,辛人化吉祿崢嶸」 (Gu Sui Fu): Ju Men takes Hua Lu in Xin years, and even in its Xian position it can turn things around. This entry does not mention that, but the two are worth reading together.

TranslationTian Xiang in the Career Palace: in its temple, suited to both civil and military office, with a salary of a thousand zhong; in a Xian position, rise and fall. With Zi Wei, power and rank; with Wen Chang, Wen Qu, Zuo Fu and You Bi in the same palace, power, distinction, honor and rank;

The zhong was an old measure of grain; a thousand zhong means a generous salary.
Commentary

Tian Xiang in its temple: suited to civil and military office, 「食祿千鍾」, a rich salary. Tian Xiang's transformed qi is the seal, and it is a lord of the Career Palace, so here it is back in its own seat. In Xian (Mao, You), ups and downs. With Zi Wei (Chen, Xu), power and rank; with Wen Chang, Wen Qu, Zuo Fu and You Bi, power and distinction. With Tian Xiang in the Career Palace, the Spouse Palace opposite always holds Po Jun: steady and conciliatory at work, much change in love. See Tian Xiang in the Career Palace.

✎ Note

Translation(Tian Xiang) with Wu Qu, a post on the frontier; with Lian Zhen, towering power and rank; with Qing Yang, Tuo Luo, Huo Xing, Ling Xing, Di Kong or Di Jie added, demotion and exile.

An official demoted and sent to a distant post.
Commentary

Tian Xiang with Wu Qu (Yin, Shen), 「邊夷之職」: a frontier post, read today as an expatriate, overseas or remote assignment. With Lian Zhen (Zi, Wu), towering power, another case of Tian Xiang defusing Lian Zhen's malice. With malefic stars, demotion, consistent with the Tian Xiang chapter's 「羊陀空劫重相會,口舌官災」, quarrels and official trouble: what the seal star fears most when it meets malefic stars is trouble with its post.

✎ Note

TranslationTian Liang in the Career Palace: in its temple in Wu, meeting Zuo Fu, You Bi, Tian Kui and Tian Yue, talent fit for both civil and military office. With Tian Tong, no small power and rank; with Tian Ji, towering eminence; with Qing Yang, Tuo Luo, Huo Xing, Ling Xing, Di Kong or Di Jie added, ordinary.

Commentary

Tian Liang in its temple in Wu (alone), meeting Zuo Fu, You Bi, Tian Kui and Tian Yue, has talent for civil and military office: this is Shou Xing Ru Miao (the Longevity Star in Its Temple) in the Career Palace. With Tian Tong (Yin, Shen), no small power; with Tian Ji (Chen, Xu), towering eminence. The Tian Liang chapter says it 「顯於王室職位,臨於風憲」 (What Does Tian Liang Govern?), the censorate being the office of oversight; in a career, Tian Liang is best at work that looks after people or keeps watch, such as auditing, supervision, medicine and social work. See Tian Liang in the Career Palace.

✎ Note

TranslationQi Sha in the Career Palace: in Miao or Wang, towering success in military office, with no small power and rank; not suited to civil officials. With Wu Qu, power and rank; with Lian Zhen, honors and eminence.

Commentary

Qi Sha in Miao or Wang, 「武職崢嶸權貴非小,不宜文人」. Qi Sha is the general star, so in the Career Palace it means a career that calls for pushing hard, competing and making decisions. The Qi Sha chapter says Qi Sha 「在官祿得地,化禍為祥」 (What Does Qi Sha Govern?), turning misfortune to good fortune in a strong position in the Career Palace, where it does best. With Wu Qu (Mao, You), power and rank; with Lian Zhen (Chou, Wei), honors and eminence. With Qi Sha in the Career Palace, the Spouse Palace opposite always holds Tian Fu. See Qi Sha in the Career Palace.

✎ Note

TranslationPo Jun in the Career Palace: in Miao or Wang, imposing and outstanding in military office. With Wu Qu plus Hua Quan, Hua Lu, Wen Chang and Wen Qu, eminence; with Qing Yang, Tuo Luo, Huo Xing or Ling Xing added, ordinary. In the same palace as Zi Wei, a name widely known; with Lian Zhen, civil officials do not last, and a petty clerk does best.

Commentary

Po Jun in Miao or Wang: imposing in military office. With Wu Qu (Si, Hai) plus Hua Quan, Hua Lu, Wen Chang and Wen Qu, eminence; with Zi Wei (Chou, Wei), a name widely known; with Lian Zhen (Mao, You), civil office does not last, and a clerk's post is best. With Po Jun in the Career Palace, the Spouse Palace opposite always holds Tian Xiang. The Po Jun chapter says Po Jun 「在官祿主清貧」 (What Does Po Jun Govern?), clean but poor in the Career Palace, a harsher tone than here; set side by side, the two show that the Quan Shu's view of Po Jun in this palace depends on whether it is strong or Xian. See Po Jun in the Career Palace.

✎ Note

TranslationWen Chang in the Career Palace: in its temple, with Tai Yang, plus lucky stars and Hua Ke, Hua Quan and Hua Lu, talent fit for both civil and military office. Together with Tian Fu and Wen Qu, wealth and rank both complete.

Commentary

Wen Chang in its temple with Tai Yang, lucky stars and Hua Ke, Hua Quan and Hua Lu: talent for civil and military office; together with Tian Fu and Wen Qu, wealth and rank both. Wen Chang with Tai Yang in the Career Palace is exactly the Tai Wei Fu's 「太陽會文昌於官祿,皇殿朝班」 (Tai Wei Fu), and part of Yang Liang Chang Lu. Translated to today, exams, credentials and writing are what open the door to a career.

✎ Note

TranslationWen Qu in the Career Palace: in Miao or Wang, suited to both civil and military office. In a Xian palace in the same palace as Tian Ji and Tai Yin, a petty clerk with power and rank. Meeting Zi Wei, Tian Fu, Zuo Fu and You Bi, often near the sovereign and holding the reins of government. With Qing Yang, Tuo Luo, Huo Xing, Ling Xing, Di Kong or Di Jie added, ordinary.

近君
Near the sovereign.
Commentary

Wen Qu in Miao or Wang: good for civil and military office; in a Xian palace with Tian Ji and Tai Yin, a petty clerk with power. There is a problem on the chart here: Tian Ji and Tai Yin share a palace only in Yin and Shen, where Wen Qu is Ping in Yin and De in Shen, never Xian, so 'in a Xian palace with Tian Ji and Tai Yin' cannot be matched. Meeting Zi Wei, Tian Fu, Zuo Fu and You Bi, 「近君頻而執政」: working beside the center of power. In modern organizations, that is rising through eloquence, communication and coordination: secretaries, advisers and spokespeople are Wen Qu positions.

✎ Note

TranslationZuo Fu in the Career Palace: in its temple, talent fit for both civil and military office; most prosperous in military office, not favorable for civil officials. Meeting lucky stars, a pure and esteemed post, good for both civil and military office. Seeing Qing Yang, Tuo Luo, Huo Xing, Ling Xing, Di Kong or Di Jie, reputation rises and falls.

身中清
Terse; roughly, holding a pure and esteemed post.
Commentary

Zuo Fu in its temple: talent for civil and military office, 「武職最旺,不利文人」. Zuo Fu has no brightness of its own, so 'in its temple' here more likely means the main star in the same palace is in Miao or Wang. Zuo Fu in the Career Palace means helpers and a team at work. 'Not favorable for civil officials' is the same as in the You Bi entry, perhaps because Zuo Fu and You Bi were seen as deputies in military posts. People like this suit team-based work, and their careers move forward through cooperation.

✎ Note

TranslationYou Bi in the Career Palace: suited to military office, not favorable for civil officials. With Zi Wei, Tian Fu, Wen Chang and Wen Qu in the same palace, both wealth and office fine. In a Xian palace, rise and fall, and demotion and exile; seeing Qing Yang, Tuo Luo, Huo Xing, Ling Xing, Di Kong or Di Jie, also dismissal and demotion.

黜降
Dismissed or demoted.

Textual note: The 和 in 「不和文人」 is probably an error for 利 (the Zuo Fu entry has 「不利文人」); the 美 in 「見美陀」 should be 羊.

Commentary

You Bi: suited to military office; with Zi Wei, Tian Fu, Wen Chang and Wen Qu, wealth and office both fine; in a Xian palace, ups and downs and demotion. As the text note explains, 'not in accord with' should be 'not favorable for', and 美 should be 羊. You Bi and Zuo Fu get almost the same verdict in the Career Palace, which shows the Quan Shu treating the pair as a set in the career seat. A capable deputy at one's side, though when malefic stars come, the deputy may also become the source of trouble.

✎ Note

TranslationLu Cun in the Career Palace: meeting lucky stars, good for both civil and military office; both wealth and office fine; descendants hold titles and ranks; fine in every palace.

Noble titles and official ranks.
Commentary

Lu Cun in the Career Palace: meeting lucky stars, good for civil and military office, wealth and office both fine, and 「子孫爵秩」, titles for one's descendants. The Lu Cun chapter says 「與帝星守官祿,宜子孫爵秩」 (What Does Lu Cun Govern?), the source of this entry. With Lu Cun in the Career Palace, Qing Yang and Tuo Luo always sit in the Friends and Property Palaces. For a modern career: a stable one and a fixed income, suited to civil service, large companies and other places where things build up over the long term.

✎ Note

TranslationQing Yang in the Career Palace: in its temple, most favorable for military office; with lucky stars in the same palace, power and rank. In a Xian position, ordinary; an empty name, nothing more.

Commentary

Qing Yang in its temple: best for military office, with power and rank if lucky stars share the palace; in Xian, an empty name and nothing more. Qing Yang is the punishment star, so in the Career Palace it means work that calls for decisiveness and competition; the military, police, surgery and law, the 'blade-wielding' jobs, fit best. Qing Yang is in its temple in Chen, Xu, Chou and Wei. People like this get ahead in fiercely competitive fields, but need to watch for conflict at work.

✎ Note

TranslationTuo Luo guarding the Career Palace alone: ordinary; even with lucky stars added, an empty name, nothing more.

Commentary

Tuo Luo alone: ordinary, and even with lucky stars only an empty name. Tuo Luo's rating in the Career Palace is very low, with lucky stars bringing nothing but a title. Tuo Luo rules delay, so in the career seat it means slow promotion and stalled plans. A slow-paced career, suited to steady work with no rush, where patience is the greatest asset.

✎ Note

TranslationHuo Xing in the Career Palace: in later years, honors as one wishes; in early years, rise and fall. Meeting Zi Wei and Tan Lang, lucky; in a Xian position, not fine.

Commentary

Huo Xing in the Career Palace, 「晚年功名遂心,早年成敗」: the Quan Shu's familiar 'hard first, easy later' once more. Meeting Zi Wei and Tan Lang is lucky, and with Tan Lang it is the Huo Tan pattern. In Xian (Shen, Zi, Chen), not fine. In terms of a career path: big swings early on, frequent job changes, and stability only from middle age.

✎ Note

TranslationLing Xing guarding the Career Palace alone: in a Wang palace, lucky; in a Xian position, not fine; with the lucky stars added, power and rank.

Commentary

Ling Xing alone: lucky in a Wang palace, not fine in Xian, power and rank with lucky stars. Ling Xing's Career Palace entry differs a little from Huo Xing's: Huo Xing stresses early and late, Ling Xing stresses brightness. Read together, both are stars with explosive force in the career seat, but unsteady. Today they suit short-term projects and crisis handling, work that needs bursts of energy.

✎ Note

TranslationWhen the Dou Jun meets lucky stars, wealth and office prosper in that year and month; meeting malefic stars or Hua Ji, wealth and office do not rise to eminence, and there is toil and rushing about.

斗君
Dou Jun: the palace where the first lunar month falls within a given year; the months are counted from it.
Toil (written 勞祿 for 勞碌).
Commentary

When the Dou Jun reaches the Career Palace, lucky stars mean wealth and office prosper that year and month; malefic stars or Hua Ji mean no eminence and much toil. This entry names both year and month, reading career through the annual and monthly luck together. A month when the monthly luck reaches the Career Palace and meets lucky stars is a good time to talk promotion, change jobs or pitch a proposal.

✎ Note

TranslationA verse for judging who will become a high minister:

公卿
The three dukes and nine ministers: the highest officials at court.
Commentary

From here on, the text appends five short poems, each under a small heading 'judging such-and-such office'. 'Judging high ministers' gives the conditions for reaching the very top of the court. Unlike the star-by-star entries of the twelve palaces above, these judge the level of office from the chart's overall pattern.

✎ Note

TranslationZuo Fu and You Bi wound about the emperor's seat: high office of the third rank, entering the court. If the void and evil stars are seen in the trines, it is only an empty name, a post granted through ancestral merit.

帝座
The emperor's seat: Zi Wei.
Office granted on the strength of a father's or ancestors' merit.
Commentary

Zuo Fu and You Bi around the emperor's seat: third rank at court; with the void and evil stars in the trines, an empty name and a post through ancestral merit. This is the Quan Shu's constant theme that Zi Wei needs its court: Zi Wei with Zuo Fu and You Bi is part of what later writers call Jun Chen Qing Hui (Ruler and Ministers Meet). The chart comparison places it in the Life or Career Palace. In today's language, leaders with a team can reach the top, while a Zi Wei that goes it alone tends to end up with only a title.

TranslationA verse for judging who will reach the two chief councils:

兩官府
The two chief councils: under the Song dynasty, the Secretariat and the Bureau of Military Affairs, which ran civil and military affairs; hence the chief ministers. The original writes it with an extra 官.
Commentary

'The two councils' was the name, from the Song dynasty on, for the Secretariat and the Bureau of Military Affairs, one running government and the other the army: the two highest bodies at court. The verse under this heading is about Wen Chang and Wen Qu, and means that they can carry one into the center of power.

TranslationWen Chang and Wen Qu, two stars, are hardest of all to meet; one takes up a regional command and is made a marquis amid talk and laughter. But if evil and killing stars come to break it, even what was good turns to ill.

建節
To hold the court's tally of authority: to serve as a great regional official.
Commentary

Wen Chang and Wen Qu 「最難逢」, hardest to meet: they share a palace only in Chou and Wei, which takes a particular birth hour, hence 'hard to meet'. This is Chang Qu Tong Gong (Wen Chang and Wen Qu Together). Together they bring a regional command and a title; broken by evil stars, the good turns to ill. The section on star combinations says 「昌曲臨於丑未,時逢卯酉近天顏」 (Star Combinations: Wen Chang and Wen Qu), which is exactly the condition of the two together in Chou or Wei.

TranslationA verse for judging civil officials:

Commentary

'Judging civil officials' is the verse on who will hold civil office. In the Quan Shu, civil and military office are mainly told apart by the placement of Wen Chang and Wen Qu (civil) against Wu Qu, Zuo Fu and You Bi (military). The next verse gives the conditions for civil office.

✎ Note

TranslationA civil official owes his court robes to Wen Chang and Wen Qu; the Career Palace most welcomes them. If Zi Wei and Tian Xiang come too, with Hua Quan and Hua Lu, he will surely sit in the censorate, keeping order in the rites of the court.

風憲
The censorate: officials such as censors who oversaw and impeached others.
Commentary

Civil office needs Wen Chang and Wen Qu in the Career Palace; add Zi Wei and Tian Xiang, Hua Quan and Hua Lu, and the post is in the 「風憲」, the censorate. Zi Wei and Tian Xiang are emperor and seal, and with the literary stars they make an official in charge of law and documents. The Tian Liang chapter also speaks of Tian Liang 'presiding over the censorate'. Today's counterparts are legal affairs, auditing, oversight and policy research, work that needs both writing skill and authority.

✎ Note

TranslationA verse for judging military officials:

Commentary

'Judging military officials' is the verse on who will hold military office. The next verse makes Wu Qu its hero: the Wu Qu chapter says it 「在天司壽,在數司財」, governing longevity in heaven and wealth in the reckoning, and it is also the general star of the Northern Dipper, so in the Quan Shu it stands for both military office and finance, the army and the treasury alike.

✎ Note

TranslationFor a general, the military star is best; the emperor's seat holds the balance of power in the place of Lu. With Zuo Fu and You Bi both shining on it too, gold seals and jade belts, assisting the sovereign.

武曜
The military star: Wu Qu.
The place of Lu: a palace holding Lu; some read it as the Career Palace.
Gold seals and jade belts: the regalia of high office.
Commentary

Wu Qu is the best general star; with Zi Wei holding power in the place of Lu (a palace with Hua Lu or Lu Cun) and Zuo Fu and You Bi shining on it, 「金章玉帶佐皇王」. The chart comparison reads it as Wu Qu in the Life or Career Palace meeting Zuo Fu and You Bi. The military, police, law enforcement, and management roles that weigh execution and financial control equally are this combination's modern counterparts.

✎ Note

TranslationA verse for judging clerks:

曹吏
Clerks working in the departments of a government office.
Commentary

'Judging clerks' is the verse on who will be a departmental clerk. Clerks were the low-level functionaries of each government department, below the officials in rank but the ones who actually got things done. That the Quan Shu gives clerks a pattern of their own shows the old readers saw this too as a predictable career destiny.

✎ Note

TranslationTai Yang, transformed into office, in a yang palace: with more radiance, it is kept from ill. If it meets Zi Wei and Tian Fu with Zuo Fu and You Bi, all one's life a clerk who shows his mettle.

化官
Tai Yang's transformed qi, written in the Quan Shu as 'rank' or 'office'; it rules official honor.
The yang palaces: Zi, Yin, Chen, Wu, Shen and Xu. Zi Wei and Tian Fu never fall in Tai Yang's San Fang Si Zheng, so 'meets Zi Wei and Tian Fu' cannot be matched on a chart; the chart condition marks only Tai Yang in a yang palace meeting Zuo Fu and You Bi.
Commentary

Tai Yang in a yang palace (Zi, Yin, Chen, Wu, Shen, Xu) has radiance and is not harmful; meeting Zi Wei, Tian Fu, Zuo Fu and You Bi, a lifelong clerk who shows his mettle. Requiring a yang palace for Tai Yang follows the same yin-yang matching as 「太陽星落在陽宮」 in the Children Palace chapter. But Tai Yang is Xian in Zi and Bu in Xu, so a yang palace does not guarantee light, and readers should check the brightness as well. Today it is like the standout among junior civil servants and administrators: not a high position, but one that earns a name.

FAQ

What does the Career Palace show in Zi Wei Dou Shu?

The Career Palace shows career, honors and position. When the Complete Book of Zi Wei Dou Shu was written, a career mainly meant holding office, so it goes star by star through whether a star in the Career Palace suits civil or military office, how much power and rank it brings and whether it lasts, and the ordinary careers, loss of office and demotions that come with Qing Yang, Tuo Luo, Huo Xing, Ling Xing, Di Kong or Di Jie.

Which stars in the Career Palace does the Quan Shu say suit military office?

The Quan Shu says Wu Qu in its temple with Wen Chang, Wen Qu, Zuo Fu and You Bi gives 「武職崢嶸」, towering military success; Lian Zhen in its temple 「武職權貴」, power and rank in military office; Tan Lang in its temple meeting Huo Xing or Ling Xing 「武職掌大權」, great military authority; Ju Men in its temple 「武職權貴,文人不耐久」, power in military office while civil officials do not last; Qi Sha in Miao or Wang 「武職崢嶸權貴非小,不宜文人」; Po Jun in Miao or Wang 「武職軒勝」; and Qing Yang in its temple 「最利武職」, best of all for military office.

Which combinations does the Quan Shu call 'corrupt officials'?

The text says Wu Qu with Tan Lang in the Career Palace 「為貪污之官」, is a corrupt official, and Tan Lang in a Xian palace is likewise 「貪污之官」. These are the Quan Shu's own words, and the translation renders them literally.

What are the verses on 'judging high ministers' and 'judging civil officials' about?

These are five seven-character poems appended to the Career Palace. The verse on high ministers says Zuo Fu and You Bi beside Zi Wei bring high office of the third rank; the verse on the two chief councils says Wen Chang and Wen Qu are hard to meet together and can lead to a regional command and a noble title; the verse on civil officials says Wen Chang and Wen Qu in the Career Palace, with Zi Wei, Tian Xiang, Hua Quan and Hua Lu, make a censor; the verse on military officials says Wu Qu is best; and the verse on clerks says Tai Yang in a yang palace, meeting Zi Wei, Tian Fu, Zuo Fu and You Bi, makes a lifelong government clerk.
