What the Wood 3 · Zi Wei type is like
Roots grip the soil so the rain cannot wash it away, and a Wood 3 Zi Wei is soil held exactly like that. Their authority tends to rest on rules, process and partners they trust; they come across as courteous, and underneath they are every bit as decided.
Zi Wei meets the Wood 3 Bureau
Wood holds Earth in check, so here the bureau works on the star. For Zi Wei, an Earth star, the Wood 3 Bureau acts as a constraint, the way roots grip soil: it reins in their wilful side and also lets them stand firmer. The most common form of this type is Zi Wei with Tian Xiang, about 20%, with the Life Palace in Chen or Xu and the star at Gain (De). Zi Wei with Tan Lang, with Tian Fu and with Po Jun are about 17% each; Zi Wei with Qi Sha is about 15% and Zi Wei alone about 13%. Overall the star is Prosperous (Wang) about 49% of the time, at Temple (Miao) about 27%, at Gain about 20%, and Average (Ping) only for the few with the Life Palace in Zi.
Work and money
The Complete Book's verse on Zi Wei says “With Xiang it is of use; without Xiang it is a lonely ruler,” and the same section says Zi Wei “takes Zuo Fu and You Bi as its chief ministers.” So Xiang, the minister, originally means those two assistant stars; reading Tian Xiang as the minister came later. In Wood 3 the line gains another layer. Wood restrains Earth, so the surroundings already keep this Zi Wei in check, and the one who turns that pressure into systems and partnerships is the one who is truly “of use.” Handed something new, they set the rules first: who owns what, when to report, who to call when it breaks. They do well climbing a well-run organisation, or turning a scrappy team into a proper one. With money they care about contracts and records, and there is rarely a figure they cannot account for. When an opportunity turns up outside the rules, a “try it for three months” allowance helps.
Love and getting along
In love they are big on fairness: who does which chores, whose family gets the long weekend, ideally agreed in advance. It is reassuring, and occasionally it feels like balancing the books. Soil used to being held by roots likes a frame in love too: a standing date night is enough to make them feel secure. When a partner breaks the routine and takes them somewhere new, they may grumble “you could have told me,” and then remember it for a long time.
When things get stuck
Roots that grip too hard leave the soil no air. They wait until every condition is met, and the moment passes; or they feel pressed down by their surroundings and start blaming the system. Roots gripping soil are not an attack; they keep the soil from washing away. Look at the constraint that way, pick the one rule that is truly in the way, change it, and leave the rest for now.
The rhythm of the 10-year periods
A Wood 3 Zi Wei's periods start at age 3 (counted the traditional way), and the first, 3 to 12, is the Life Palace itself. Which way the periods go after 13 depends on the yin-yang of the birth year and the person's sex. For yang-year men and yin-year women they run forward, and the second period is the Parents Palace; for yin-year men and yang-year women they run backward, and the second is the Siblings Palace. So among Wood 3 Zi Wei, some spend their teens learning to deal with elders and institutions, others with peers and siblings. The period changes again at 23 and 33. Knowing whether yours run forward or backward tells you where each decade's constraints are coming from.

Where it comes from in Purple Star Astrology
In this type Zi Wei leads the Life Palace. The Life Palace is the one of twelve that says who you are, and its main star sets your base color; when two main stars share it, the first one counts.
The bureau is the Wood 3 Bureau. The Five Elements Bureau comes from the Nayin of your Life Palace stem and branch; it places the Zi Wei star on the chart and sets the age your first 10-year period starts, which is 3 for this bureau. No bureau is better than another; Xingge reads it as a flavour of the same persona.

FAQ
Who is the “Xiang” in “with Xiang it is of use”?
The same section of the Complete Book says Zi Wei “takes Zuo Fu and You Bi as its chief ministers,” so the original meaning is those two stars. The Xingge chart follows that: with Zuo Fu and You Bi both in the San Fang Si Zheng of the Life Palace, it marks Jun Chen Qing Hui (Emperor and Ministers Meet); with none of Zuo Fu, You Bi, Wen Chang, Wen Qu, Tian Kui or Tian Yue there, it marks Gu Jun (Lonely Emperor). Tian Xiang is not part of either rule. About 20% of Wood 3 Zi Wei share the Life Palace with Tian Xiang; reading Tian Xiang as the minister is a later extension, worth considering, but it is not the pattern.
Does a Wood 3 Zi Wei get along with a Tian Xiang person?
Usually, yes. One wants to set direction, the other is good at smoothing the way, so the split of roles comes naturally. Both care about rules, and when they clash it is mostly over whose rules apply. Agree first on who has the final say in which areas, then let each run their part.
How common is the Wood 3 · Zi Wei type?
Out of 262,980 charts cast for every day and every two-hour period from 1950–2009, 4,387 have Zi Wei leading the Life Palace and the Wood 3 Bureau: about 1.7%, roughly 1 in 60 people. Every day and hour is counted equally, so this is not the actual birth distribution of a population.
Why can two people born on the same day be different types?
Where your Life Palace falls depends on your birth month and birth hour, and your Five Elements Bureau comes from the stem and branch of that palace. So on the same day, one two-hour period later moves the Life Palace by one, and the main star and bureau can both change. The twelve hours of a single day usually produce several different types.
What is the Five Elements Bureau?
The Five Elements Bureau is the Nayin element of your Life Palace stem and branch: Water 2, Wood 3, Metal 4, Earth 5 or Fire 6. The number places the Zi Wei star on the chart and is also the age your first 10-year period begins (2 for Water, 6 for Fire). A bigger number is not better or worse; Xingge reads the element as a flavour of the same persona.
How is this different from MBTI?
MBTI comes from a questionnaire about how you see yourself. An Xingge type comes from your birth date and time, with nothing to answer, and the same birth details always give the same type. They work well side by side: MBTI describes your current habits, the chart describes your underlying nature and the rhythm of your life.
Which type do I get if my Life Palace has two main stars?
When two main stars share the Life Palace, the one listed first (in the order of the Zi Wei and Tian Fu star groups) sets the persona, the same as on your chart page. A Life Palace with no main star is the Empty Palace: the Traveler.
A type looks only at the Life Palace and the bureau: the roughest outline of a chart. People of the same type differ in the Body Palace, the surrounding palaces and the transformations.
